●Compile and study commuting patterns of the schools’ population, including students, staff, visitors and volunteers. Do you walk, commute or get dropped off by automobile? If you find that your school is a magnet for automobiles, what can you do? Encourage carpooling. Work with the Parent Council and the principal to design a "walking schoolbus" as an alternate way for you to get to school – it encourages exercise, community cohesion and keeps those cars at home. The school bus is made up of local children who walk to and from the school with two parents or supervisors, stopping at designated points to pick up children along the way. Visit TravelSmart Australia at http://www.travelsmart.gov.au/schools/schools2.html for a guide on how to implement your own Walking School Bus.
● No Idling!! Working with the school staff, Parent and Student Councils adopt a no-idling policy in school zones and parking lots. Students can design and post no-idling signs along the drop off areas near your school. Download the PDF file "No Idling at School" at http://www.saferoutestoschool.ca to get started.
