Eco-Footprint
If everyone on Earth lived like the average Canadian,
we would need more than four Earths
to provide all the materials and energy we currently use.
Planet earth supports over 6.1 billion people and 30 million fellow species.
The Ecological Footprint is a tool to measure how much nature we use. It's simple:
- There is about 1.8 hectares per person of productive land and sea available if we all shared equally.
- Currently we use about 2.2 hectares per person. We are running a deficit of -.4 hectares per person. We are using more than we actually have!.
- Canadians use about 7.5 hectares each to live. So if every person on earth wanted to live like the average Canadian, we would need to grow a few more planet earths.
An Ecological footprint is made up of the water we use, the physical settings we live in and the way we access these, the energy we consume, the food we eat, and the garbage we produce.
